The Art of the Ring Box
When we think about an engagement ring, it is usually the ring itself that receives all the attention. But before it is slipped onto a finger, there is another small object that plays an important part in the moment - the ring box. A beautiful ring deserves a beautiful setting.
For us at Cubi, this is where the idea of a ring box becomes much more interesting. It isn’t simply somewhere to keep a ring. It can be an object in its own right: something carefully designed, beautifully made and intended to become part of the story.
What makes a beautiful engagement ring box?
A ring box needs to do something quite simple - present the ring - but we believe there is much more to it than that. Proportion, materials, colour, texture and the way the box feels in the hand all contribute to the experience.
We are drawn to clean, contemporary forms and the relationship between geometric shapes and natural materials. This influences the way we design our boxes, creating pieces that are deliberately understated rather than relying on unnecessary decoration. The result is a box that complements the ring without competing with it. And perhaps that is what makes a really good ring box: it enhances the moment without taking it over.
Why handmade?
There is something particularly appropriate about choosing a handmade box for something as personal as an engagement ring. A mass-produced box can be perfectly functional, but a handmade wooden ring box has a different character. The grain of the timber, the subtle variations in the material and the evidence of the maker’s hand all give it individuality.
At Cubi, our boxes are designed and made by hand in our rural workshop in the heart of the Somerset countryside. We enjoy the process of making something slowly and thoughtfully. From selecting materials to shaping, assembling and finishing each box, every stage contributes to the final piece. It is this attention to detail that we believe gives a handmade box its character.
An engagement ring box is often only used for a few moments.The lid is opened. The ring is revealed. The question is asked. But we think a well-made box deserves a longer life. Rather than being something that is opened once and then forgotten, a handmade wooden ring box can become a keepsake in its own right. It can hold the ring afterwards, sit on a dressing table or shelf, or simply be kept as a reminder of the occasion. In that sense, the box becomes part of the story. Years later, the ring may still be worn every day, while the box quietly recalls the moment it was first presented.
Inspired by art and design, much of our inspiration comes from outside the world of traditional box making. Art, architecture, pattern and geometry have all influenced the development of Cubi. We are particularly interested in the way simple shapes can interact to create something visually engaging. This is reflected in our approach to our boxes. We don’t want them to look like conventional jewellery packaging. We want them to feel like considered pieces of design. Natural wood provides the perfect starting point. Its warmth and individuality contrast beautifully with the clean lines and geometric forms that characterise our work.
A small object for a significant moment
There is something appealing about the scale of a ring box. It is small enough to hold in one hand, yet it can contain something of enormous emotional significance. That contrast is part of what makes designing and making ring boxes so rewarding. We believe the objects surrounding important moments should be considered too. The ring, of course, is the centrepiece, but the box that presents it can add another layer to the experience.
